Why an online portfolio?

Often I get asked the questions, why don’t I display my work, or when will I exhibit it?  Through this website, I am now creating the opportunity for others to easily view my line of jewellery.

Is this art?

The name of this website raises a question over the type of jewellery I make.  Is it art, design or simply my own distinctive jewellery?  This is not easily answered, as there is not always a clear distinction between these categories.  What I do know, is that I design my work with a passion and I search for inspirational structures which I then reinterpret into my own creations and shapes.  My experimentation with different materials and techniques results in new and sometimes unexpected beauty, and this is a creative adventure for me, full of surprises.

As a small child I was fascinated by constructions, open spaces and complex, interconnected forms.  I remember when I was small, my parents took me to the Kröller Müller museum in Otterlo to see the 'The needle tower' by Kenneth Snelson.  It fascinated me!  Architecture interests me enormously; how the inner-most structure of a building or bridge determines its strength and capacity.  Other sources of inspiration come from structures in nature such as the DNA-double helix, the exoskeletons and wings of insects, the slender, supple, elegance of snakes and their patterning – this intrigues me!

When I was a teenager I long puzzled over how a football was made up of pentagons and hexagons, and tried to reconstruct these shapes using beads.  Many failed attempts resulted in other creations and through this I designed my own braiding technique for 3D surfaces.

After school, I studied at the Art Academy in Maastricht. After a slight detour into Monument design, I graduated in 1992 as an illustrative designer, but jewellery has always remained my greatest passion.

Now, as a part-time designer, my priority is the development of my line of jewellery.  So occasionally I display my work in exhibitions or auctions.  This is not something I have to do, but I find it not only favourable, but it also forces me to challenge myself.

It is not possible for me to make all of my work available at once using this website, so my plan is to offer examples of new jewellery and the jewellery currently in stock.  These will be regularly updated and changed so please check back from time to time for updates and to see my new designs.  It is a diverse range of jewellery and as such the price is dependent upon the design, material used and the number of invested man-hours in the creation.  For this reason I have organised the available jewellery into different categories.

Enjoy looking around my website and my work!
